You’ve sold your house or found a place to rent, so you think that the hard part is over! But then you look around and realize that you have to figure out a way to pack all your stuff! It can be a daunting task, but we’ve compiled some steps to make the process more seamless:
Get Your Packing Materials Ready
We recommend getting your packing materials ready as soon as you know that you’re moving. Get as many boxes as you can – plastic totes are even better! For a three-bedroom house, you may need up to 90 boxes, so ask local grocery stores or Facebook groups if they have free boxes to give away. Make sure to have several permanent markers so you can label boxes. Also purchase clear packing tape to use to close boxes and masking tape that you can use to label totes. You should also purchase bubble wrap so that you can wrap up breakable items. Another great thing to have is a plastic cover for your mattress(es)! Finally, have a few garbage bags for your soft items like sheets and towels. You can even use garbage bags for the clothes in your closet. Leave all the clothes on hangers. Cut a small hole in the bottom of the garbage bag. Take the handle of the hangers and put the top of the hanger through the hole in the bag and pull the garbage bag down around your clothes. Now you’ve made yourself a cheap garment cover!
Go Through Your Items
As soon as you have your packing materials, start by sorting through the cupboards and closets that contain any items that you only use seasonally. If you know that you won’t be using any of those items before your move, then pack them up right away! If you find any items that you won’t use ever again or have never used to begin with, then donate them, sell them, give them away, or throw them away. There’s no sense taking an item from house to house that’s useless to you. Find it a home where someone will appreciate it! Also make sure that you go through every room in your house: your kitchen, your bathrooms, your attic, your garage, your basement, your bedrooms, your office, and your dining room. Leave no spot in your house unturned – you’ll be happy you did it when it comes to moving day!
Pack with Ease
When it’s time to start packing your boxes, keep like items together. Pack kitchen items in the same boxes, pack bathroom items in the same boxes, etc. This will also make it much easier to label your boxes, and make sure to label every one of them! Label them with what room they belong in and a general description of what’s in them. You’ll be glad you did when it comes time to finding a fork for your first meal in your new home!
When you are packing your boxes, keep the heavier items on the bottom and put lighter ones on the top. Try to pack each box so that it is a carriable weight. Test it if you’re not sure and move some of the heavier items to another box if one is too heavy. After each box is packed, make sure to seal it with packing tape so nothing spills out. It’s also a good idea to save the original boxes of items like electronics; that way you can ensure that they get to your new house without damage.
Now that your items are packed and organized, you can easily delegate tasks to your moving crew! Tell them that every box is labelled with what room it should go into, and it should be an easy process from there. Make sure that your moving crew is booked well in advance, and use Moveogo to find the best one for your next move!
